Most diverse album to date... but is that a good thing?
Has it all gone `pete tong' for Coldplay ? There are instrumental tracks, long 7 mins tracks, tracks that change tempo and tone half way through. This is certainly their most experimental album.
It's as though they raided their own album collection and referenced different styles that they liked i.e. 42 has piano riffs like john lennon's - imagine, lovers in japan is like 80's pop, yes - take's off nico's venus in furs.
It's an album that's not as easy to get into as their previous ones, but good never the less.

Viva la Vida - better with every listen
I bought and listened to Vida the first time and thought about 3 of the songs were great, the rest were ok. Then the more I listened to it the more the rest of the songs popped out and became there own. I have listened to it about 6-8 times now and find it is very deep, engaging and still has that addictive melodic feel that only coldplay has. I would recocmend it to any Coldplay fans.

* Best Coldplay Ever ...
Been a fan of Coldplay from the get-go. This is my favorite disc of theirs so far. Was listening to it while waiting in a parking lot this afternoon and a few pedestrians came over to ask who it was I was listening to on the radio (I'd had my iPod plugged into my car). I was listening to Strawberry Swing at the time. Gave them a sample of every track (three people) and they're all eager to buy. It's tough today, the way radio is lately, to catch your favorite bands. I think the record companies decide who we should listen to vs. DJs these days so huge marketing budgets on the record company side dictate what's playing on our air waves/who we're exposed to band wise. You get one blogger with an attitude spouting off his opinion and it might discourage you from checking it out. Very same blogger pushes their favorite musician/group - you check it out - it's not to your liking. Cut through all of the noise and check this disc out for YOURSELF on iTunes if you wanna take a listen to their tracks (you can have a listen to any music there no charge) and decide for yourself. My guess is you'll agree it's a keeper - I love it, love it, love it! :D

Another Home run for Coldplay
There have been many critical reviews of Coldplay lately, citing that they re-use the same "tricks" time and time again. While this criticism has only surfaced lately now that they have their fourth studio album out, it has nonetheless fueled anticipation of Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. And just as X&Y back in 2005 sold millions of copies, such with likely be the fate for Viva La Vida.
On this Coldplay album, much more so than any other, Chris Martin and company has clearly put an effort into diversifying their sound as much as possible. While Martin's signature vocals are still present and Buckland's guitar riffs are still there, much of the rest of the Coldplay sound seems to have gone for a makeover. Tracks such as Lost! seem to almost hint at a hip-hop influence with the background beat. At the same time tracks like Violet Hill feature a heavier guitar sound than Coldplay usually exhibits.
In any case, this CD would be a great addition to an collection and definitely a must-have for any Coldplay fan!

* Thoughtful, High Quality Release ...
I was very glad to purchase a 12" vinyl of this release, which also included the whole album on cd inside. I've listened to it several times now and It is extremely enjoyable. One of the things I really like about the album, is that it is very thematic musically and lyrically. One song flows into the other, but not predictably. Some of the song structures, the guitar hooks and stops/starts catch you by surprise. They managed to create an easy listening album that is unique and creative and quite brilliant. The piano and organ presence is memorable. I went back and listened to X&Y fully, then returned to Viva La Vida and I find that this new album is a more complete, thematic album with a great flow of songs throughout. You can definitely hear who their sensible pop influences are, such as U2 and possibly New Order but those influences don't define Coldplay - they have created their own brand. Highly recommended.
