Chroniques et points de vue:From :Styled more along the lines of a revolutionary cell than a band, Bloc Party approach the medium of rock'n'roll with the sort of high seriousness usually reserved for philosophy lectures. Yet on Silent Alarm, this 'autonomous unit' of smart, wiry London youth don't just succeed in reinvigorating the artform--they come pretty close to reinventing it from the ground up. Whereas early singles like 'She's Hearing Voices' found the band still attempting to chisel their own image out ...

Chroniques et points de vue: :Thanks to a gaggle of loyal MySpace friends, Kate Nash skyrocketed to the top of the British charts just a year after penning her first song, so you might expect her first album to sound a bit cobbled together. ln reality, it is a wildly exuberant, refreshingly original set of songs that suffers from only a few lyrical clunkers and less-than-realized melodies. For the most part, it follows mentor Lily Allen's genre-busting lead, wrapping charming tunes like 'We ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :What do you expect from a band that has been together for 20 years and released 11 studio recordings? lf you've answered 'more of the same,' then, in Blue Rodeo's case, you'd be exactly right. Small Miracles is upbeat light-country-meets-soft-rock that oscillates between Greg Keelor's Band-esque style and Jim Cuddy's love-leaning lyrics, just like the bulk of their other ten CDs. 'l held you but you held back from me,' sings Keelor on the country-meets-bluegrass track, 'Blue ...

Chroniques et points de vue: :Ah, youth: the exuberance, the energy, the blistering highs and bottomless depths. lt's an ideal breeding ground for true rock & roll belief. Hence, the youngsters of Paramore unearth geysers of loud, sugary angst on Riot!, their major label debut and follow-up to 2005's All We Know ls Falling. Small-town musicians who have played together for years, Paramore boasts the appeal of an emo-pop blast developed out of savvy songwriting and musicianship. The sweet spot the band hits--somewhere ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :After releasing Screaming for Vengeance in 1982, Judas Priest began a creative slide from which they've never recovered. However, if you're going to be remembered for something, it might as well be a record as heavy, incisive, and melodic as Screaming. The disc features the band's biggest hit, 'You've Got Another Thing Coming,' a sonic inferno that is as hook-laden as it is heavy. But the album also contains uncompromising turbo-blasts such as the title track and ...

par: Leonard Cohen

Chroniques et points de vue: essential recording:Leonard Cohen's deeply personal first LPs came out at a time when many of his peers were issuing furious, counterculture-inspired rants; he clearly had little interest in sticking with the pack at the time. So it makes a certain kind of contrary sense that Cohen would put out an offbeat topical collection two and a half decades later. The Future is an odd duck of an album; it's also brave, funny, and fascinating. 'Give me back ...

Digital Camera - Reviews

Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.

November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.

Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.

The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.

Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.

The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.

The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
