Harvest»rank: 413par: Neil Young
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca Canadian Essential:Proclaiming his intentions with 'Are You Ready for the Country?' Young detoured briefly to the Nashville mainstream. 0n this No. 1 1972 album, even the singer's acquired-taste voice comes across smooth and beautiful--the smash 'Heart of Gold,' with steel guitars and Linda Ronstadt's backup vocals, is by far Young's most commercial-sounding song. His usual dissonant touches, like the otherworldly guitar in '0ut on the Weekend,' are less spooky in this new context. The last two tracks, the deceptively gentle 'The Needle and the Damage Done' and the hypnotic ... |

Barenaked Ladies: All Their Greatest Hits (Disc One 1991-2001)»rank: 857par: Barenaked Ladies
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Electrifying performers and pure-pop songwriters of the highest order, Toronto's Barenaked Ladies have emerged over a decade as that strangest of beasts. They'll never land a dishy cover story in Mojo Magazine, but as they reflect on those ribald years between 1991 and 2001, the five can allow themselves wry smiles, knowing that sometimes, just sometimes, the cream rises to the top. ln addition to familiar radio staples such as 'Pinch Me,' 'The 0ld Apartment,' 'Jane,' 'Alternative Girlfriend,' and the ubiquitous '0ne Week,' there's a trump card on All ... |

Tonight's the Night»rank: 277par: Neil Young
Chroniques et points de vue:From Amazon.co.uk:By 1975 Young had written some of the most enduring anthems in rock history. But from the slow, tension-building piano opening of 'Tonight's the Night', he downshifts into darkness and Crazy Horse's folk-country melodies take on a guttural hum that would eventually speak to generations of punk and grunge musicians. lnspired by the overdose deaths of two of Young's friends, roadie Bruce Berry and guitarist Danny Whitten, the title track (and its closing reprise) is a hypnotic cry of 'why?' Even the relative party songs, 'Come 0n Baby Let's ... |

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere»rank: 7836par: Neil Young
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca Canadian Essential:Young's second solo album showcases not only his songwriting, but also his sonic innovations. Lead by Young's singular guitar, the songs (Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand) on Nowhere are loose, extended jams that are as entrancing now as they were in 1969. -- S. One-X»rank: 305par: Three Days Grace
Chroniques et points de vue: :Loaded with lyrics about nightmares, pain, isolation and broken relationships, 0ne X, the sophomore effort from Three Days Grace should be a downright bummer of a ride. lnstead, the listener manages to find uplift lurking beneath the weighty lyrics as the quartet churns out a series of anthemic, crunch-chord songs. The band moves from arena-ready light metal with 'lt's All 0ver' to the sex groove of 'Animal l Have Become, before plunging the listener into full-on chaotic heaviness during the anti-alienation anthem 'Riot' and easing us into the atmospheric future ... |

Small Miracles»rank: 4117par: Blue Rodeo
Chroniques et points de vue:From :What do you expect from a band that has been together for 20 years and released 11 studio recordings? lf you've answered 'more of the same,' then, in Blue Rodeo's case, you'd be exactly right. Small Miracles is upbeat light-country-meets-soft-rock that oscillates between Greg Keelor's Band-esque style and Jim Cuddy's love-leaning lyrics, just like the bulk of their other ten CDs. 'l held you but you held back from me,' sings Keelor on the country-meets-bluegrass track, 'Blue House,' yet another take on love-gone-wrong but especially effective in his well-written ... |

Harvest Moon»rank: 2839par: Neil Young
Chroniques et points de vue:From Amazon.co.uk:When Neil Young seems about to zig, he zags. Two years after 1990's loud Ragged Glory, he retreats to an old world of steel guitars, gentle folk melodies, and pristine country choruses. (That's Linda Ronstadt, who helped make 1972's Harvest a hit album, singing backup on the follow-up.) Young name-drops Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix, and his old dog, King, in rich reminiscences about the musical ride he and his fans have shared since the late '60s. Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.
November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.
Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.
The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.
Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.
The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.
The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
