Outskirts»rank: 28389par: Blue Rodeo
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca:Toronto twang quintet Blue Rodeo have evolved into one of Canada's most popular, polished roots-pop ensembles, but their 1987 debut shows that the seed was there from the start. Built around the back-and-forth vocals of guitarists-songwriters Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor, songs like 'Rose Coloured Glasses' and '0utskirts' are country rock with an emphasis on the rock end of the equation. Compared to Blue Rodeo records like Nowhere to Here and Tremolo, 0utskirts is a modest beginning. The instrumentation is under-whelming beyond the flamboyant Acetone organ runs of ... |

Electric Version»rank: 2106par: New Pornographers
Chroniques et points de vue:From :The New Pornographers' debut album was the stuff of legend, a near-perfect collection of catchy songs filled with lush sonics, anthemic sing-alongs, and retro pop hooks. Seemingly out of nowhere, the band--featuring Zumpano's Carl Newman, Destroyer's Dan Bejar, and alt-country goddess Neko Case--forged a power pop masterpiece. Electric Version is, thankfully, not all that different. For its 45 minutes, the album never eases up on its great influences; you're treated to a baker's dozen of memorable tunes that harken to prog-rock, New Wave, and the British lnvasion. ... |

Interzone Mantras»rank: 18936par: Tea Party
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Whatever one thinks of the Tea Party's ambitious yet commercial rock, the band deserves credit for not being afraid to come off as pretentious as a sack of Rush records. True to the trio's nature, The lnterzone Mantras--the group's fifth full-length studio disc--is a study in excess. From an insert that folds out into a 16-panel poster of a multi-armed, multi-eyed deity to a song title borrowed from a Russian novel ('The Master and Margarita') to deep-throated spiritual pronouncements and everything-but-the-didgeridoo arrangements, the album never shies away ... |

Trouble In Dreams»rank: 18622par: Destroyer
Chroniques et points de vue: :All hail Destroyer's ninth-or-so full-length, Trouble in Dreams. Many, many gosh-darn dudes go in for the 'vaguely weird indie-rock music with oblique lyrics' schtick, and yet it's still an utter joy to hear Dan Bejar do it. He does it so well: if you close your eyes (or if your record collection doesn't go back before 1995), you might believe he invented this stuff. 0verloaded, gorgeous, EBowed guitar work drips all over these songs. A few tunes suffer a tad from overly proggy, lurching rhythms, particular 'Plaza Trinidad,' ... |

4 Nights At The Palais Royale»rank: 25562par: Sloan
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Canadian power-pop superstars Sloan celebrate their dominance with this double-live-CD set, recorded largely during a multi-evening stand at a Toronto theater. Most of 4 Nights of the Palais Royale's meaty performances at least equal their studio versions, with a stripped-down 'Everything You've Done Wrong' and a cranking 'Money City Maniacs' among the highlights. The single most impressive moment, though, may be when the band adapts the noisy psychedelic extravaganza 'Anyone Who's Anyone' to the requirements of the stage. Throughout, Sloan is likable, smart, and tough-minded, deserving of ... |

Diesel vehicles have nearly a 50-percent market share in Europe, thanks to tax incentives and diesel-friendly legislation across the EU. Diesels are so passé there that you can buy a BMW 730d and no one will think it odd that your luxury car burns oil. Pull up in a diesel 7-Series in America and people would leer at you like you've alighted from an amphibious vehicle reeking of saltwater and dead trout.
But now, thanks to the oft-reported combo of newly-raised CAFE standards, not-so-newly-raised gas prices, and the 50-state diesel engine, GM, Ford, and Chrysler are about to dip more than a hesitant toe into the diesel game. Chrysler offers a diesel in the Grand Cherokee, but soon all three automakers will offer diesels in their best-selling lineups of light trucks -- the Dodge Ram 1500 is expected to offer a 50-state diesel after 2009. Light trucks are being used to lead the charge since those buyers stand to gain the most with the least amount of (perceived) sacrifice.
Diesels currently have 3.2-percent of the American market. Some estimates put them at 15-percent by 2015. That's a huge leap, and diesel still has plenty of hurdles. Diesels will come with a cost premium over gasoline-engined cars. That should be easy enough to conquer -- incentives and some quick cost and longevity calculations should convince people of the benefit. The real hurdle is the nagging issue of perception. The plan will probably be to attack that with a price that makes the proposition unbeatable. Said Chrysler's director of environmental affairs, "If it's priced right, we can sell diesel here. Diesel can give you an immediate poke in fuel economy -- 20 to 40 percent. Not many technologies can deliver that today."
