Chroniques et points de vue:From :Arcade Fire fans are an enthusiastic bunch, and they've been hungry for more music from their favorite group. But be forewarned, this EP was actually recorded and released by the band independently in 2003. The EP is an interesting glimpse into the development of these musicians; decidedly less experienced at that point, the band didn't have quite as much oomph as they do now. When you compare these tracks with their first single, 'Rebellion (Lies)' from Funeral, you can immediately feel a difference in confidence, from vocals ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Hip-hop continues to grow up, expanding beyond the 'hood and outside of its American birthplace. Like France's lAM or Britain's Dizzee Rascal, this Canadian rapper puts a unique internationalist spin on contemporary rap. K-os is a skilled rhyme-slinger who openly loathes 'bling rap' ('Emcee Murdah') and who harks back to rap's golden era on cuts like 'B-Boy Stance,' a James Brown breakbeat-fuelled number. However, like Andre 3000 and his 'Hey Ya' pop affectations, K-os's strongest material might be the tunes that are the least hip-hop-inspired. Between the ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :While never particularly accessible to begin with, Skinny Puppy reacted to the mainstreaming of industrial (Ministry, KMFDM) with their most challenging disc. Reissued with new packaging, 1990's Too Dark Park does not follow the path set by its predecessor, Rabies, which dabbled in rock structure and pomp. There are most definitely guitars here, but nothing resembling a riff or hook. Each track is already filled up with layers upon layers of audio collage, abrasive squalls, squawks, and squelches, with less emphasis on the clever film samples and ...

Brand New History

Brand New History

par: Econoline Crush

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Brand New History is a multidimensional outing that melds modern, classic, and alternative rock elements into a 12-song tour de force that at times is reminiscent of lNXS, BT0, Nine lnch Nails, and the Cult (NlN's Chris Vrenna and the Cult's Billy Duffy guest here). Though Brand New History's musical salutes are palpable, Trevor Hurst delivers his vocals with a distinctive, soulful panache and there's a cohesiveness and originality to the band's soaring compositions, most notably the bold midtempo rocker 'Make lt Right.' The vibrant, danceable 'Flamethrower' ...

On paper, the Mio DigiWalker P550 looks to be an attractive gadget for the mobile professional, combining the capabilities of a PDA and GPS into one device. However, its poor battery life and subpar navigation skills tell a different story.

Though it won't appeal to the masses quite yet, the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet is a nice, portable device for on-the-go Web browsing, and it has some worthy upgrades.

Though it has a few design and performance glitches, the Sony Ericsson W300i is a quality, basic MP3 cell phone.

Diesel vehicles have nearly a 50-percent market share in Europe, thanks to tax incentives and diesel-friendly legislation across the EU. Diesels are so passé there that you can buy a BMW 730d and no one will think it odd that your luxury car burns oil. Pull up in a diesel 7-Series in America and people would leer at you like you've alighted from an amphibious vehicle reeking of saltwater and dead trout.

But now, thanks to the oft-reported combo of newly-raised CAFE standards, not-so-newly-raised gas prices, and the 50-state diesel engine, GM, Ford, and Chrysler are about to dip more than a hesitant toe into the diesel game. Chrysler offers a diesel in the Grand Cherokee, but soon all three automakers will offer diesels in their best-selling lineups of light trucks -- the Dodge Ram 1500 is expected to offer a 50-state diesel after 2009. Light trucks are being used to lead the charge since those buyers stand to gain the most with the least amount of (perceived) sacrifice.

Diesels currently have 3.2-percent of the American market. Some estimates put them at 15-percent by 2015. That's a huge leap, and diesel still has plenty of hurdles. Diesels will come with a cost premium over gasoline-engined cars. That should be easy enough to conquer -- incentives and some quick cost and longevity calculations should convince people of the benefit. The real hurdle is the nagging issue of perception. The plan will probably be to attack that with a price that makes the proposition unbeatable. Said Chrysler's director of environmental affairs, "If it's priced right, we can sell diesel here. Diesel can give you an immediate poke in fuel economy -- 20 to 40 percent. Not many technologies can deliver that today."
