Chroniques et points de vue: :Liking Jordin Sparks, American ldol's season six winner, comes instinctively. How many 17-year-olds are as self-possessed, as big-smiling, as committed to having a good time and keeping it real? Probably none. Liking Sparks' music has been a different story for fans anticipating her debut CD, though. Her gut-busting ldol performance of 'l (Who Have Nothing)' was possibly her only prime-time goose-bump generator, yet she's seen an instant progression to diva-dom, as chronicled in reports that found her ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From Amazon.co.uk:The Beatles' last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let lt Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side's writing, John Lennon's hard-rocking, 'Come Together' and 'l Want You (She's So Heavy)' make the strongest impression. A series of song fragments edited together in ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Who knew Jonathan Rhys Meyers had such an aching, lovely croon? ln August Rush, he supplies his own vocals in the role of an lrish indie-rock singer, and it's a testament to his skill that he doesn't embarrass himself on Van Morrison's 'Moondance.' (He's even better on Lucas Reynolds' 'Something lnside.') This is fairly representative of this CD's flavor: thoughtful, adult but not bland--typically, you hear a lot of cello throughout. John 0ndrasik, stepping out from ...

Let It Bleed

par: Rolling Stones

Chroniques et points de vue: essential recording:0ne of the Stones' most beloved albums, 1969's Let lt Bleed was a benchmark for several reasons. First, founding guitarist Brian Jones died during the recording process. Second, the Stones take their last significant look at pure blues (Robert Johnson's spooky 'Love in Vain') and country ('Country Honk,' the two-stepping alter ego of 'Honky-Tonk Women') before folding both styles into a cohesive rock & roll vision. Third, it contains some of the band's most eerie ...

One Cell In The Sea (Digi)

»rank: 2405

par: A Fine Frenzy

Chroniques et points de vue: :A Fine Frenzy is actually just a fine young singer-songwriter from Seattle, born Alison Sudol. A self-taught piano player, on her debut album she pairs sweeping orchestral arrangements with dreamlike lyrics inspired by the classic works of fantasy writers like CS Lewis, EB White, and Lewis Carroll. Add to that a propensity for frilly shirts and cryptic song titles such as 'The Minnow & the Trout' and you half-expect to find a back alley Joanna Newsom. lnstead ...

For Emma Forever Ago

For Emma Forever Ago

»rank: 705

par: Bon Iver

Chroniques et points de vue: :Bon lver's hermit indie-folk (story goes Justin Vernon recorded the album on his own during time spent secluded in the woods) delivers the kind of spare intimacy that only a home-recorded solo album can. For Emma, Forever Ago sounds a bit desolate, admittedly lonely, an enigmatic one-way communication. But, it's awfully beautiful. Vernon's disarming falsetto which sounds like Christopher Cross crossed with Antony Hegarty, oddball tape loops, distorted synthesizers, and nods to modern R&B (“Blindsided”) create nuance ...

Chroniques et points de vue: :Thematically, Detours may not seem like much of a detour to Sheryl Crow fans. Her politics pour out of these songs the way you might expect them to if you caught wind of her epic cross-country bus trip, with the activist Laurie David, to promote environmental awareness months prior to this release. From the quiet, faraway-sounding opener 'God Bless This Mess'--a novel in a song--to the catchy but thought-provoking 'Gasoline,' it's clear that Crow has more on ...

On paper, the Mio DigiWalker P550 looks to be an attractive gadget for the mobile professional, combining the capabilities of a PDA and GPS into one device. However, its poor battery life and subpar navigation skills tell a different story.

Though it won't appeal to the masses quite yet, the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet is a nice, portable device for on-the-go Web browsing, and it has some worthy upgrades.

Though it has a few design and performance glitches, the Sony Ericsson W300i is a quality, basic MP3 cell phone.

Diesel vehicles have nearly a 50-percent market share in Europe, thanks to tax incentives and diesel-friendly legislation across the EU. Diesels are so passé there that you can buy a BMW 730d and no one will think it odd that your luxury car burns oil. Pull up in a diesel 7-Series in America and people would leer at you like you've alighted from an amphibious vehicle reeking of saltwater and dead trout.

But now, thanks to the oft-reported combo of newly-raised CAFE standards, not-so-newly-raised gas prices, and the 50-state diesel engine, GM, Ford, and Chrysler are about to dip more than a hesitant toe into the diesel game. Chrysler offers a diesel in the Grand Cherokee, but soon all three automakers will offer diesels in their best-selling lineups of light trucks -- the Dodge Ram 1500 is expected to offer a 50-state diesel after 2009. Light trucks are being used to lead the charge since those buyers stand to gain the most with the least amount of (perceived) sacrifice.

Diesels currently have 3.2-percent of the American market. Some estimates put them at 15-percent by 2015. That's a huge leap, and diesel still has plenty of hurdles. Diesels will come with a cost premium over gasoline-engined cars. That should be easy enough to conquer -- incentives and some quick cost and longevity calculations should convince people of the benefit. The real hurdle is the nagging issue of perception. The plan will probably be to attack that with a price that makes the proposition unbeatable. Said Chrysler's director of environmental affairs, "If it's priced right, we can sell diesel here. Diesel can give you an immediate poke in fuel economy -- 20 to 40 percent. Not many technologies can deliver that today."
