Standards»rank: 32603par: Tortoise
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Tortoise formed in Chicago in the early 1990s from a pool of musicians most of whom had spent time in bands concerned with aggressive, guitar-centric rock. From the outset their aesthetic was crafted partly in opposition to that. Relying mostly on drums, vibraphone, two basses, keyboards, sparing use of guitar, and being attuned to the many strains of electronic dance music that developed throughout the decade, the ensemble quickly established a distinctive sound that caught a ... |

Brain Damage In Oklahoma»rank: 70740par: Angus MacLise
Chroniques et points de vue:From Amazon.co.uk:The second archival release by founding Velvet Underground percussionist Angus MacLise (born 1938, died 1979) is even more powerful than 1999's excellent lnvasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda. Where the former record had its share of psychedelic whimsy, Brain Damage ln 0klahoma City exudes an implacable determination to deliver both the performers and their audience into an ecstatic state. MacLise's three solo performances on hand drums and cembalum (a variety of hammered dulcimer), with their driving rhythms and ... |

Logic Will Break Your Heart»rank: 7823par: The Stills
Chroniques et points de vue:From :With pretty synth lines; chiming, chugging guitar riffs; the right influences for a rock band, circa 2003 (the Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Cure , New 0rder, Radiohead, U2, Chameleons) and another sexy singer with a melodramatic, soaring tenor, this well-hyped Montreal band could very easily be another lame lnterpol cover band. But the Stills are far more than the sum of their influences; they've actually recorded one of the best debuts of 2003. The ... |

These Are The Vistas»rank: 14253par: the Bad Plus
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Here's a major-label debut that doesn't disappoint. For starters, Midwestern piano trio the Bad Vistas--in the same vein as Dave Douglas or Brad Mehldau--clearly know a thing or two about how to mix pop music with forward-thinking jazz. The group covers Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' Blondie's 'Heart of Glass,' and Aphex Twin's 'Flim' with wit, virtuosity, and respect to the originals--these interpretations never sound in the least bit clichéd or overwrought. But even the new ... |

Diesel vehicles have nearly a 50-percent market share in Europe, thanks to tax incentives and diesel-friendly legislation across the EU. Diesels are so passé there that you can buy a BMW 730d and no one will think it odd that your luxury car burns oil. Pull up in a diesel 7-Series in America and people would leer at you like you've alighted from an amphibious vehicle reeking of saltwater and dead trout.
But now, thanks to the oft-reported combo of newly-raised CAFE standards, not-so-newly-raised gas prices, and the 50-state diesel engine, GM, Ford, and Chrysler are about to dip more than a hesitant toe into the diesel game. Chrysler offers a diesel in the Grand Cherokee, but soon all three automakers will offer diesels in their best-selling lineups of light trucks -- the Dodge Ram 1500 is expected to offer a 50-state diesel after 2009. Light trucks are being used to lead the charge since those buyers stand to gain the most with the least amount of (perceived) sacrifice.
Diesels currently have 3.2-percent of the American market. Some estimates put them at 15-percent by 2015. That's a huge leap, and diesel still has plenty of hurdles. Diesels will come with a cost premium over gasoline-engined cars. That should be easy enough to conquer -- incentives and some quick cost and longevity calculations should convince people of the benefit. The real hurdle is the nagging issue of perception. The plan will probably be to attack that with a price that makes the proposition unbeatable. Said Chrysler's director of environmental affairs, "If it's priced right, we can sell diesel here. Diesel can give you an immediate poke in fuel economy -- 20 to 40 percent. Not many technologies can deliver that today."
