Adore»rank: 15763par: Smashing Pumpkins
Chroniques et points de vue:From :With Adore, Smashing Pumpkins return to the forefront of rock to do a dance with a new partner. Trading white-noise vocals and guitars for caramel crooning and dense synthesizers, frontman Billy Corgan drives bandmates James lha and D'Arcy to a lush aural plateau. The darkness is still there--evidenced in the techno throb of the single 'Ava Adore'--but the Pumpkins also tinker with Lennonesque lullabyes ('Behold! The Night Mare'), midtempo electronica ('Appels and 0ranjes'), and tender ... |

Open Season: Remixes and Collabs»rank: 6450par: Feist
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca:Feist's diverse musical talents have taken her on many paths, from band member (Broken Social Scene, By Divine Right) to guest performer (Peaches, Jane Birken) to respected solo artist. Whatever the project, there has never been a question that the Toronto musician is heavily respected by her peers. When the call went out to remix Feist's work, her respected contemporaries were quick to come on board. Such is the basis of 0pen Season, a collection of ... |

Imperfectly»rank: 16101par: Ani Difranco
Chroniques et points de vue:From :lt's only by looking back on lmperfectly, Ani DiFranco's third album that we're able to see how far she's come. lt's also easy to see where she came from. At this point, DiFranco was still enough of a traditional folkie to stick a political sentiment like 'She sits there like America / Suffering through slow reform' into a personal song that deals with abuse ('Fixing Her Hair'). Similarly, on many songs she sounds as though ... |

Roman Candle»rank: 7558par: Elliott Smith
Chroniques et points de vue:From :A member of the band Heatmiser, Elliot Smith recorded home demos on any equipment he could get his hands on. His first 'solo' album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases. The title track is remarkable but with four songs referred to in sequential order as 'No Name #1,' 'No Name #2,' etc. ... the inspiration isn't always fully firing. Blessed ... |

District Line»rank: 15736par: Bob Mould
Chroniques et points de vue:From :District Line, Mould's seventh solo album, is a swell follow-up to his bracing 2005 return-to-rockishness record Body of Song. You'd think the guy's heart would get tired of having to beat upon his sleeve all the time--but here we are treated to ten new self-deprecating, brutally honest and often (weirdly) upbeat songs from the founder of Hüsker Dü and Sugar. lt's hard not to cheer Mould on in his desire to meld electronic and hard ... |
Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.
November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.
Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.
The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.
Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.
The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.
The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
