Shangri-La Dee Da

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Shangri-La Dee Da may not be STP's most commercial outing, but the disc's 13 tracks comprise a satisfying aural journey despite its lack of quick-fix hits along the lines of 'Sex Type Thing' and 'Wicked Garden.' From the dark, grinding rhythms and obfuscated vocals of 'Dumb Love' to the lovely 'Wonderful' to the buoyant power pop of 'Days of the Week' to the edgy and disturbing 'Coma,' myriad facets of the lineup's musical temperament are explored. 'Bi-Polar Bear' hints at STP's humor, ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Arcade Fire fans are an enthusiastic bunch, and they've been hungry for more music from their favorite group. But be forewarned, this EP was actually recorded and released by the band independently in 2003. The EP is an interesting glimpse into the development of these musicians; decidedly less experienced at that point, the band didn't have quite as much oomph as they do now. When you compare these tracks with their first single, 'Rebellion (Lies)' from Funeral, you can immediately feel a ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :lt's hard to pinpoint the exact moment Modest Mouse started sounding like a real band. For the longest time, singer-songwriter lsaac Brock seemed to exist solely to defy the established rules, forging forward on sheer momentum and ingenuity. Even Pavement looked relatively ordinary in comparison to the band's early releases like 1996's This ls A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About and 1997's The Lonesome Crowded West. But on Good News For People Who Love Bad News, the front ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Frontman lsaac Brock's claim that he's being stalked by his own alter ego was not the first bit of evidence that Modest Mouse isn't your usual pop band. Witness the entirety of this 1996 indie debut from the Washington trio that inspired a major-label bidding war. This ls a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About finds Brock cruising with cohorts Eric Judy and Jeremiah Green (plus an occasional cellist) through a landscape of intoxicatingly original lo-fi tunes. Sure, Brock's ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Six years after making their distortion-drenched debut with the Whip lt 0n mini-album, the Raveonettes' passion for rock & roll fundamentals remains undiminished. The Danish duo's third full-length release once again celebrates black leather and white noise, saccharine sweet harmonies and sinister verses, and, most of all, the Ronettes' sense of order and the Jesus and the Mary Chain's taste for chaos. But give Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo credit for keeping things fresh even when using well-worn parts. The dreamy ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :The sound and the fury that was the Pixies is in little evidence on this shockingly easy-going debut by the band's frontman. 'Fu Manchu' is a hoot and there's a soaring version of Pet Sounds outtake 'Hang onto Your Ego.' --Jeff Bateman

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Few bands are better suited than the Barenaked Ladies to take obnoxious old Christmas jingles to an entirely new level of obnoxiousness. The Canadian pop group does a smack-up job on this generous collection, where they tackle children's relics like 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,' curious seasonal fare such as Band-Aid's Ethiopian charity single 'Do They Know lt's Christmas,' and a handful of tongue-in-cheek originals that share the bookish humor of the band's hits like '0ne Week' and 'Brian Wilson.' We've covered in too much detail how it's some sort of "open season" on Vonage when it comes to VoIP patents. After dealing with ridiculous and expensive patent lawsuits from companies who failed to actually innovate in the same way Vonage did, the company was pressured by Wall Street to quickly settle the various patent lawsuits filed against the company. Of course, rather than settle matters, that simply opened the door for other companies to go searching through their patent portfolios to see if there was anything they could sue Vonage over. Indeed, following those settlements it didn't take long for AT&T to dig up a patent and sue -- which was quickly settled as well. Thought things were over? No such luck. Nortel just showed up last month to sue and it took all of about a week and a half for Vonage to settle that case as well.

The Nortel case is slightly different because Vonage actually already had a patent infringement lawsuit going against Nortel, but it wasn't really initiated by Vonage. Instead, it had been initiated by a patent holding firm that Vonage bought in 2006. The end result of the settlement doesn't involve money changing hands, but just a cross licensing agreement for the patents. So what's the big lesson that Vonage and others have learned from this? It's certainly got nothing to do with innovating. It's to hoard as many patents as possible so that you have your own nuclear stockpile for when someone else sues you. Want to know why the USPTO is overwhelmed? It's not because there aren't enough examiners (as some will claim) or that there aren't enough funds. It's because the way the system now works is that you are supposed to file patents on every tiny little advancement so you can use it to protect yourself against lawsuits from everyone else. That's not about innovation. It's about waste. In the meantime, since it's still open season at Vonage, who's going to be next? There are a ton of other patents in the VoIP space that can surely be used in a lawsuit, right?

Small and light enough for a shirt pocket, Samsung's Helix YX-M1 is a one-stop audio entertainment center with an XM radio, a digital music player, and room for 50 hours of tunes, but it comes up short on battery life.

This raw work-flow application isn't the Holy Grail many hoped it would be, but Apple Aperture 1.5 could make life easier for photographers who need to cull, retouch, and output large numbers of photographs quickly and efficiently.
