Chroniques et points de vue: :lt's about time some authority finally declared the Hives the greatest live band in the world. And The Black and White Album, their third U.S. full-length, as a jaw-dropping facsimile of a band leaping and lurching live, three feet from your face. Big backing vocals, propulsive rhythms, and twin-guitar thickness, will have you convinced the Swedish quintet is playing live inside your head. Yes, the trope of 'Tick Tick Boom'--Black and White's first single--has come up ...

par: Gwen Stefani

Chroniques et points de vue:From :There's nothing like a Gwen Stefani disc to rip you from your pop comfort zone and, in the pleasantest way possible, knock you around a bit. 0n The Sweet Escape, the blows arrive roughly every four minutes: a yodel ('Wind lt Up') skitters off ceremoniously before the title track, featuring Akon, catches you off guard with its infectious yelps of 'Woo-hoo, YEE-hoo!,' and the pouty rap of '0range County Girl' has barely petered out before ...

par: Saliva

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Saliva's heavy rock--with a dash of rap--is at once current and timeless, unlike many of the bands spawned by Korn and Limp Bizkit. This Memphis-bred bunch's powerful, diverse debut features a dozen lyrically and musically focused tracks from a band clearly possessed of strong chops and smart heads. Rangy singer Josey Scott's passionate delivery works well when matched with the chunky riffing of 'Musta Been Wrong,' the soaring, layered song's intensity balanced by shredding guitar. ...

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Their prospects dangerously over-inflated by pundits who often hailed their debut as nothing short of rock-messianic, New York City's Strokes got a lesson in cynical rock-press dynamics when their biz-troubled, if similarly toned, '03 follow-up was dutifully dismissed as the proverbial sophomore slump. A lesser band might have been chastened by the experience; this one responds with a third album that positively bristles with energetic challenges. Revolving around a loose concept that allows songwriter/frontman Julian ...

Chroniques et points de vue: :The notion that rock must perpetually break new ground and reinvent itself is the odious legacy of 10 too many years of rock-crit navel gazing, and one that young Australian power trio Wolfmother stands gleefully on its head with their effusive debut. Hardly surprising to find a new generation's reaction to a decade of shoe-gazing alternative rock angst to be a return to the guilty pleasures of unabashed, blues-based stadium rock--even if they seem unsure whether ...

On paper, the Mio DigiWalker P550 looks to be an attractive gadget for the mobile professional, combining the capabilities of a PDA and GPS into one device. However, its poor battery life and subpar navigation skills tell a different story.

Though it won't appeal to the masses quite yet, the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet is a nice, portable device for on-the-go Web browsing, and it has some worthy upgrades.

Though it has a few design and performance glitches, the Sony Ericsson W300i is a quality, basic MP3 cell phone.

Diesel vehicles have nearly a 50-percent market share in Europe, thanks to tax incentives and diesel-friendly legislation across the EU. Diesels are so passé there that you can buy a BMW 730d and no one will think it odd that your luxury car burns oil. Pull up in a diesel 7-Series in America and people would leer at you like you've alighted from an amphibious vehicle reeking of saltwater and dead trout.

But now, thanks to the oft-reported combo of newly-raised CAFE standards, not-so-newly-raised gas prices, and the 50-state diesel engine, GM, Ford, and Chrysler are about to dip more than a hesitant toe into the diesel game. Chrysler offers a diesel in the Grand Cherokee, but soon all three automakers will offer diesels in their best-selling lineups of light trucks -- the Dodge Ram 1500 is expected to offer a 50-state diesel after 2009. Light trucks are being used to lead the charge since those buyers stand to gain the most with the least amount of (perceived) sacrifice.

Diesels currently have 3.2-percent of the American market. Some estimates put them at 15-percent by 2015. That's a huge leap, and diesel still has plenty of hurdles. Diesels will come with a cost premium over gasoline-engined cars. That should be easy enough to conquer -- incentives and some quick cost and longevity calculations should convince people of the benefit. The real hurdle is the nagging issue of perception. The plan will probably be to attack that with a price that makes the proposition unbeatable. Said Chrysler's director of environmental affairs, "If it's priced right, we can sell diesel here. Diesel can give you an immediate poke in fuel economy -- 20 to 40 percent. Not many technologies can deliver that today."
