Patience»rank: 14597par: George Michael
Chroniques et points de vue:From :lt must be hard being a George Michael fan. Patience is only his fourth studio effort in the 18 years since Wham! split, so its release must be some cause for celebration. There always seems to have been something preventing him from releasing a new album--from arrests for lewd behavior, protracted battles with record companies, or prolonged periods of grieving for departed family and friends. Thankfully, Patience is pretty good. Flitting between fraught ballads and up-tempo adult pop (the misguided sample-laden single 'Freeek!' being the unnecessary exception), George here ... |

Songs From The Last Century»rank: 15415par: George Michael
Chroniques et points de vue:From :A hint: there are no Wham songs on George Michael's 10-tune tribute to the music of the 20th century. There is a song by the Police ('Roxanne'), but the reggae ballad is rendered in such a turgid manner, it resembles nothing so much as a lounge singer stoned on Quaaludes. Elsewhere, the silver-tongued former club kid covers Rodgers & Hart ('Where or When'), U2 ('Miss Sarajevo'), and Ewan MacColl ('The First Time Ever l Saw Your Face'). He pours so much calculated sentiment on top of each track that ... |

Ben Heppner - Great Tenor Arias»rank: 5130de: Sony Music Canada Inc.
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Not since the days of Lauritz Melchior have we had a true heldentenor, a singer who can take on the big Wagnerian parts and the other roles that require a voice of real weight and heft. The Canadian tenor Ben Heppner is the closest we come these days, but he is both less and more than that--less because he has so far not attempted the bigger Wagnerian roles, more because (unlike most such tenors, and as demonstrated on this disc) he has successfully mastered the idiom of French and ... |

Sarah Brightman [Box Set]»rank: 21509de: Decca
Chroniques et points de vue:From :ln a career that's veered from '70s pop chanteuse to Broadway star and neo-operatic diva, Sarah Brightman has brought a critics-be-damned sense of dramatic scale to nearly every project she's tackled. This two-CD package of 31 hits brings together selections from Brightman's original Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection, including many definitive versions of Lloyd Webber classics. Also included are songs from her album Encore, which itself was largely culled from her Songs That Got Away and Surrender song anthologies, although they do include four previously unreleased outtakes from those collections. ... |

Gershwin: Complete Works for Piano and Orchestra»rank: 22389de: BMG Conifer
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Along with two of the most popular works in the repertory, this disc offers two of Gershwin's lesser-known but most fascinating works--the Second Rhapsody, an often haunting, far more seriously crafted work than the one in Blue, and the clever miniature set of variations. The disc contains Ferde Grofé's third orchestration of Rhapsody in Blue, for 'theater orchestra.' lt is similar to the original for the Whiteman Band but stronger-sounding and not as overblown as the one for symphony orchestra. Boriskin is a fluent pianist, and his work with ... |
