Beethoven: Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus»rank:de: Teldec
Chroniques et points de vue:From :This zippy ballet is early Beethoven--the only work of its type that he ever wrote. lt dates from the same time as the First Symphony, which is around 1800, and is noteworthy in two other respects: it's the only piece of orchestral music that Beethoven ever wrote that uses a harp (l know--big deal--but from such trivia are music snobs made. Go intimidate your friends!), and he uses a tune that later becomes the main theme of the finale of the Third Symphony, and consequently the subject of the ... |

Syms 6/8»rank: 132852de: Teldec
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Every Beethoven cycle has its weak link, and the Sixth Symphony is Nikolaus Harnoncourt's. Rather than let Beethoven's inspired musical simplicity speak for itself, Harnoncourt treats the piece in a very self-conscious manner, with a smoothness and lack of edge that defeats much of the work's rhythmic life. lt's not a bad performance, just a strange one, and the Eighth is terrific. lf you're collecting the complete cycle, you'll want this regardless of any reservations. --David Hurwitz |

Mozart:Symphony Nos. 39, 40 & 41»rank: 132852de: Teldec
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Nikolaus Harnoncourt's Mozart is very interesting and unusual, certainly not the sort of thing you'd chose as your first version, but a worthwhile supplement if you're looking for a characterful alternative viewpoint. Fortunately, Teldec has put Harnoncourt's performances of the last four symphonies together on a specially priced set (two CDs for the price of one). This set is the original, full price issue of only three symphonies, and you should opt for the lower priced reissue if these performances interest you. --David Hurwitz |

Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 7»rank: 132852de: Teldec
Chroniques et points de vue:From :These two symphonies are a popular CD pairing, and they actually have quite a bit in common. Both begin with long, slow introductions, have fleet Scherzo third movements and two of Beethoven's zippiest finales. Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts both works with a keen understanding of both their similarities and differences. They rank with the finest modern performances available. --David Hurwitz |
