L'avis des consommateurs

Note: 5 out of 5 stars - This is hands down the BEST of GYBE's side projects...
Do not forget the later Silver Mt. Zion efforts. But this debut is by far their best in my opinion in terms of mood (very hypnotic) and vocals - or lack thereof..

A beautiful journey down the road of melancholy. It evokes a strong sense of sadness and loss in the face of imaginary strife and turmoil. It brings despair to some, hope to others. You can lose yourself in the interpretation. But I can say one thing for sure.. this is the stuff masterpieces are made of. Take a look at much of the classical greats and violin concertos. One really comes to mind.. Arvo Part. Much of classical music was born from strife and sorrow, but in the end we can glean a bit of hope from it all. Same goes for this album in a post-modern apocalyptic world..

Note: 5 out of 5 stars - Phenominal
I can't see why there are so many negative reviews for this CD. It's freakin' incredible. It's one of those albums where you can just sit there in the dark and listen. It emcompasis everything I love in music; sorrow, sadness, despair, beauty and in the end...hope.

Note: 5 out of 5 stars - * End Time Is Nigh ...
With the Apocalypse on the approach, or so the record would suggest, we find ourselves gridlocked in a hopeful melancholia. A depression sets in, but, as is human nature, we strive on. Though many of my friends think of me as suicidal for listening to this, I must tell them they are missing the perfectly constructed anti-melodies and the evocative effect they possess.

You can almost see the smoke rising from the cigarettes of those huddled in bomb shelters, surrounded by religious paraphenlia as a last resort for hope, when listening to "Move (Never Made)". Each track, though most have no lyrics, has a story arc no matter how truncated the elegant musical arrangements may be.

A Silver Mt. Zion manages to separate itself from its mother band, yet remain close enough to make comparisons - even though they are wholly unnecessary. The members having come from the massive ensemble known as Godspeed, You Black Emperor! pared down the instrumentation while still sparing the full sound necessary for effect. The Apocalypse is just as present in these songs as it is in teh twenty minute beautiful futuristic symphonies composed by Godspeed.

Though the record may limp, wounded and needy, through your head with its lulling ballade of the End Times, there is still an omnipresent sense of frozen hope waiting to be thawed, exposed and utilized. It's a great record for reaching into yourself.

Note: 4 out of 5 stars - the broken chords can sing a little...
the Godspeed You Black Emperor side-project, a silver mount zion. started by efrim of GYBE. three member band, but grows into a six member band on "born into trouble as sparks fly upward".

the monsterous title "he has left us alone but shafts of light sometimes grace the corners of our rooms" all deticated to efrim dog, Wanda. who could've thought a simple concept for a album could be so beautiful? "he has left us alone..." has eight tracks (i'd say seven really, because track six is only five seconds.... pretty useless since its just the five seconds of track seven) and you get 47 minutes of beauty, sadness, and thoughts about efrim's dog. a silver mount zion expands post-rock by adding vocals to their songs. GYBE does not have this. i can't say the vocals are good, they're pretty mediorce, in my opinion at least. track four, "movie (never made)" tells the story of silver mount zion. they sing it though... it would've been better if they used the old man talking in GYBE's "the dead flag blues".

the cover and all is amazing. you have great foiled art front and back and inside are data about the band and who does what, and also the track listing and how long they are. now, heres a pretty dumb problem... every one is estimated such as "broken chords can sing a little" is 8 minutes 48 seconds. the cover says 9:00. EVERY song minute is estimated to ":00". but thats not all... some are wrong! "13 angels standing guard round the side of your bed" is 7 minute 22 seconds. the cover says 4:00. its not a huge problem at all, but don't even bother putting it there if its not even right.

the album starts out with a silver mt. zion's most famous song, "broken chords can sing a little". i'm not meaning its on mtv and stuff... its just on alot of illegal download sources. anyways, broken chords starts out with a haunting piano. it gives a very chilling and atmospheric sound to it. might be my favourite on the record but i'm not sure. "sit in the middle of three galloping dogs" is great also. actually, most of the tracks are great... just some are disappointing. the ending, "for wanda" is not as amazing as it SHOULD be but its not bad. eh, i'm not explaining this well... i'll just rate the songs!

1. broken chords can sing a little: 9/10
2. sit in the middle of three galloping dogs: 9/10
3. stumble then rise some awkward morning: 8/10
4. movie (never made): 7/10
5. 13 angels standing guard round the side of your bed: 10/10 (chilling violin makes the song)
6. long march rocket or doomed airliner: won't rate it since its only five seconds long.
7. blown-out joy from heaven's mercied hole: 8/10
8. for wanda: 7.5/10

final: a silver mount zion's debut is amazing. while its certainly no Godspeed You Black Emperor... its a great side-project with haunting ambence noises. if you are a GYBE fan and have yet to pick up this... i highly recommend it. if you havent even heard of GYBE or a silver mount zion... then get into GYBE first, then check these guys out.

one of the best records from 2000.

Note: 1 out of 5 stars - * Too bad to believe! ...
My command of the English language is inadequate to accurately describe the complete lack of musicianship present on this disc. It's not somber or depressing or minimalist in nature, it's boring, bland, and inane. It fails to engage me at any level.

I've been listening to indie for years and I despise anything pop so don't accuse me of only listening to accessible music. These days, I'm used to discs with one or two good songs and then a lot of filler, it's the nature of the beast. But this one has no redeeming value at all. This is truly the worst disc I own. I would not recommend it to my worst enemy for fear of insulting him or her.
