The Hard and the Easy CD/DVD»rank: 5738par: Great Big Sea
Chroniques et points de vue:From : A band that has made a name for itself since 1992 by updating the Celtic and, more specifically, Cape Breton tradition, Great Big Sea has long mixed poppy original tunes with traditionals goosed up to fit a more modern aesthetic. 0n the band's eighth album, The Hard And The Easy, the Canadians focus wholly on traditional Newfoundland folk tunes of all shapes and colors. All the music is acoustic and most (surprise!) have a seafaring ... |

Something Beautiful»rank: 474par: Great Big Sea
Chroniques et points de vue:From :A Platinum-selling act in their Canadian homeland, Great Big Sea has mined that country's proud Scots/lrish Celtic heritage in a decidedly modern context. Their arrangements are honeycombed with the accordions, bouzoukis, pipes, whistles and fiddles typical of traditional music and nicely handled they are, too. But these come across as afterthoughts amid a powerhouse hit machine featuring robust lead vocals, a booming drum kit, and close-harmony hooks obviously calibrated to induce stadium sing-alongs. The group is ... |

Play»rank: 6117par: Great Big Sea
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca:Great Big Sea's third album and first to go multi-platinum, Play established this little band from Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, as one of the country's most popular groups. lt's probably the best representation of their early sound, which combined East Coast folk and sea shanty traditions with a polished rock style. Play boasts an array of traditional tunes--including 'The Night Pat Murphy Died,' 'General Taylor,' and 'Jakey's Gin'-- and these tales of bootlegging and donkey-riding are all given ... |

Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca Canadian Essential:Blending high-energy Celtic and Newfi influences with charged rock, Great Big Sea hits on all cylinders on this 1996 release. While adding a bit more muscle to their sound on UP, Great Big Sea still retained the power of tradition. And while this collection does include a cover of Slade's 'Run Runaway', it also includes what may be their finest moment, the frenetic 'Mari-Mac'. -- S. Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.
November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.
Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.
The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.
Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.
The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.
The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
