Don Dokken-Up From the Ashes
This album is one of the best including Don Dokken's work with Dokken. It is right up there with Under Lock and Key. In the early 90's bands like Dokken, Ratt, and Motley Crue all had members that did other projects. Stephen Pearcy did the Arcade project which produced a decent first album and an average second. Vince Neil did a couple of ok albums but nothing to write home about. Lynch Mob, to me, never did anything worthwhile. However, Don Dokken's Up From the Ashes was an anomaly. It captured the power and energy of Dokken and had a new reflourished sound. I had hoped that Don would do a 2nd solo effort right after the way Lynch Mob did but he waited for Dokken to reform. Being the Dokken purist, I was happy at the time but in retrospect I wish there would have been a sequel. This is a must have for any hard rock fan. It's also one that your normal person doesn't have so you can pull it out and surprise the heck out of someone who is unsuspecting. Brilliant!

Not Dokken ?
This is the last album to have the true Dokken sound & only Don is left!,what he did was got some hired guns,namely John Norum(Europe),Peter Baltes(Accept)-notice Peter's trademark teutonic background vox on this album-& Mickey Dee(Motorhead)& put out an
a** kicker of an album.Have no reservations,if you loved "Lock & Key" & "Tooth & Nail",you'll love this.Any Lynch Mob albums or post Dokken break-up releases don't even come close !

* The epitome of Dokken ...
Hate to say it, but other than Back for the Attack, this is the best album any of the former or current members of Dokken have put together. To keep it short but sweet, you wont hear a better album. This is one of my top 5 albums of any genre and any time. There is not an album with better melodies. Crash & Burn (about false prophets - those who give hope only for their own gain, etc.), When Some Nights (the best guitar melodies I have ever heard), Forever and Mirror, Mirror (seen the video? M-suckin-TV played it for about one week) are songs everyone will love. If you like Hard Rock, buy this CD, you won't regret it!

Great Solo Effort From Don Dokken
UP FROM THE ASHES is a great solo album by Dokken front man Don Dokken. It's way better than the Lynch Mob album released around the same time. If you love TOOTH AND NAIL and UNDER LOCK AND KEY, you'll love UP FROM THE ASHES.

* Don IS Dokken! ...
I will be honest with you. I am not very crazy about solo projects by front men or members of bands I like. Often they "experiment" with things that they shouldn't and a strange, if not indeed just plain bad sound is created. The best example I can give you is Bret Michaels' tribute to Poison called "Show Me Your Hits."
That album almost killed Poison for me. It was just horrible!
So, I was at the store today and there were two Dokken albums on sale for a reduced price. "Shadow Life" and Don's solo album "Up From the Ashes." I had heard Puppet on a String from Shadow Life and thought it was a decent song but since hearing that song I was told by many that it is, to put it mildly, not a good or remotely happy album. So, I opted for the solo album and took a chance.
To say I'm blown away is an understatement!
From Crash 'n' Burn to The Hunger, I was shocked to hear just how much this album sounds like Dokken, the band! In fact, if I didn't know better, I'd swear George Lynch was on guitar! Of course, he wasn't. It was John Norum formerly of Europe. A little "FYI" information for you. John actually played with Dokken on their 2002-2003 tours. Not many can hold a candle to George Lynch, John holds a torch to it.
Crash 'n' Burn, Mirror Mirror, When Love Finds a Fool, Stay, and Livin' a Lie are my personal favorites off the album. There are a few melodies that fall a little flat and there are times when I think the chorus could have been slightly more energetic. But for the most part I thought the album to be one for the ages. It's up there with Under Lock and Key, for sure!
So, if you're afraid, as I was, of horrible and drastically different solo albums, fear not good citizen! This album is living proof, Don is the driving force behind Dokken: Not George, Jeff, or even Mick (though I LOVE Mick.) This is musical ecstasy. Pick it up! You'll be glad that you did!
