Chroniques et points de vue:

From Amazon.co.uk:
There is much to explore in Silver Mt Zion's Born lnto Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upwards. The first movement ('Sisters! Brothers! Small Boats of Fire are Falling from the Sky!') is a lush, richly scored orchestral piece, with found sound loops and complex instrumentation all contributing to a truly uplifting, climatic dirge. The second movement is much slower, with more traditional rock elements--feedback, silence and discordant guitars--creeping in among the neo-classical instruments. lt's the album's centrepiece track 'Take These Hands and Throw Them in the River' which really astonishes, however-imperilled ricocheting vocals, violins wailing like The Dirty Three, suffocating atmosphere like Mogwai, lyrical paranoia, a pulsating beat, all building up to a tumultuous climax. After the storm comes the lull, with birds twittering and cooing, but the pace soon builds up again culminating in another climax of distortion and noise, a pop melody and a final arpeggio guitar. The message at the end is 'Musicians are cowards'. --Everett True

Note: 4 out of 5 stars - Music for another Plane Crash
Sorry to say to my Austin TX dude below who wrote a review, this is not on the kranky record label but it is on the equally fantastic Constellation label. Constellation is not only famous for its cardboard covers and ghastly weird named bands but its famous for its incredible music. Godspeed, Do Make Say Think, Exhaust, Fly Pan Am, Sofa and Sackville - but now, A Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band! Amazing... their fabulous follow up to "He Has Left us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corners of our Rooms" is outstanding!! "Born into Trouble..." starts with its regular icy sadness following with more sadness. This dreary, dismal dark stuff is perfect stuff for people jumping out thousand story buildings, planes crashing, news broadcasts, CNN, industrial worlds, President Bush, the government and all that other jazz. This album along with it's preceding album is some of the most fabulous, ambient, post rock, orchestra-based beauty I've ever heard. Seeing that at least two or three other bands on the Constellation label include members from the Godspeed Band like - 1 Speed Bike, Exhaust, A Silver Mt. Zion, Fly Pan Am ect... you will love this.

Note: 5 out of 5 stars - a CAUSATION, not a sensation
This is one of the handful of most important albums I've ever heard. Amazingly beautiful, it even slightly outdoes its predecessor. And I'll take some haunt with that beauty any
day -- we're all the richer for it. How can anyone abide this space the members of this ensemble abide? We can only thank them. The speech by the young person is remarkable and hits not a false note (except what's meant, I suppose, as falsity). Brilliant concepts and the best titles since (altogether different) early Frank Zappa.

Note: 5 out of 5 stars - * There's singing oh lovers of godspeed ...
I have to say the only reason I got this album is because of my love for godspeed. This is quite a unique piece of work though. Certainly you can hear a lot of godspeed but the sound is somewhat different. My favourite two songs are the one with "these hands could've moved mountains" over and over and the piano one after it, these two together strike me as the most original and gel perfectly tegether. the album as a whole works very well though.

Note: 5 out of 5 stars - Great music, but a mouthful...
As is obvious from the group's lengthy moniker and CD title, The Silver...Band is not overly concerned about their marketability, and judging by their music, they are certainly not out to please a mass audience, nothing on Born into Trouble... could be played on commercial radio stations. In an ideal world merit would be met with recognition, and this group would be a household name. This work IS of the highest merit, but there simply is no established audience or niche for this type of music - yet.

In many ways it is more classical than rock, but it is definately not classical in style; there is just an excellent use of violins that I have never heard in Pop-rock. The Silver...Band does not use violins in an unorthodox or gimmicky way, like say Led Zepplin, nor do they turn an electric guitar into a mock-cello like Sigur Ros. No, The Silver...Band uses violins like they should be used, as part of the program and central to the music production, not as background noise for a "Classical" rendition of a popular rock song (like say Metallica and their arrangement with the San Francisco Orchestra).

I think someday this type of music will become popular, and someone who produces it could achieve the acclaim of a Debussy or Mahler, there is no reason it should not be - the public is not that stupid. I don't know how this band will get there with a name that makes dissemination virtually impossible. Ditto for GYBE.

Note: 5 out of 5 stars - * near perfect ...
... SMZ's predecessor band, Godspeed Your Black Emperor, is so brilliant that its somewhat snotty pretensions are perfectly camouflaged by its radiant brilliance. SMZ, however, shows signs of pretentiousness on their latest effort, "Born Into Trouble As Sparks Fly Upward". The songs in "Born Into" do not build up to any emotional pinnacle as those of GYBE. Many of the promising potentials are self-consciously restricted. But unlike other contemporary post-rock "indie-chamber" outfits such as Rachel's or The Sword Project, who thrive on slow-paced, swirling soundscapes, "Born Into" lacks the unbound and unconcerned fortitude of the aforementioned band. Also, the vocal track on this disc is, frankly, obnoxious. It breaks the emotional concentration of the audience and disturbs the overall mood. I have nothing against vocal, if it's done correctly The Sword Project did a pretty good job, for example. But the vocal track on this record feels like it is blindly intruded into the tranquility of the accompanying instrumentations (for that matter, Mogwai's "Rock Action" suffers the same problem). All that being said, it's important to note that the thin line between high-art and affectation is often ambiguous and subjective. What sounds to me like ostentatious may not be so to others. Ostentatious or otherwise, one cannot deny that "Born Into Trouble" is still a decent record. In short, I think the potentials captured on this disc are not fully realized. It's good, but could be much better.

Small and light enough for a shirt pocket, Samsung's Helix YX-M1 is a one-stop audio entertainment center with an XM radio, a digital music player, and room for 50 hours of tunes, but it comes up short on battery life.
