The Reminder»rank: 113par: Feist
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca:The Reminder, Feist's third release, comes from the same well of quiet, appealing songwriting, and delicate vocalizations that made 2004's Let lt Die such a sweet treat. This one is a bit more hushed and ballad heavy, closer to Cat Power than Peaches (with whom Feist has also worked with in the past) but maintains an indie-minded blend of confessional pop, jazzy folk, and lo-fi torch songs. The comparatively upbeat single 'My Moon My Man' splits her voice off into unexpected harmonies, just dissonant enough to stick in your head. ... |

Open Season: Remixes and Collabs»rank: 3641par: Feist
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca:Feist's diverse musical talents have taken her on many paths, from band member (Broken Social Scene, By Divine Right) to guest performer (Peaches, Jane Birken) to respected solo artist. Whatever the project, there has never been a question that the Toronto musician is heavily respected by her peers. When the call went out to remix Feist's work, her respected contemporaries were quick to come on board. Such is the basis of 0pen Season, a collection of remixes and rarities from Feist's heavily-acclaimed 2004 release Let lt Die. Curiously, more than ... |

Raising Sand»rank: 37par: Robert Plant, Alison Krauss
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Perhaps only the fantasy duo of King Kong and Bambi could be a more bizarre pairing than Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Yet on Raising Sand, their haunting and brilliant collaboration, the Led Zeppelin screamer and Nashville's most hypnotic song whisperer seem made for each other. This, however, is not the howling Plant of 'Whole Lotta Love,' but a far more precise and softer singer than even the one who emerged with Dreamland (2002). No matter that Plant seems so subdued as to be on downers, for that's one ... |

Sleep Through The Static»rank: 363par: Jack Johnson
Chroniques et points de vue: :Jack Johnson recorded his fourth album using nothing but solar power. This is somehow fitting for a singer-songwriter, surfer, and filmmaker who spends most of his days floating in the ocean under Hawaii's open skies. The forces of nature certainly seem to have found their way into the mellow grooves of standout tracks like 'What You Thought You Need,' 'Adrift,' and 'Go 0n,' songs so lovely and effortless that you can almost hear the melodies coming to Johnson on a warm breeze that rustles through the coconut trees. Sleep Through ... |

The Baroness»rank: 367par: Sarah Slean
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca:Sarah Slean's recipe for her musical concoctions is unwaveringly consistent: take a handful of Cabaret-affected melodies, add a sprinkle of musical theatre, then steep that all together in a stockpot of fragile but powerful emotions. With some of the singer's earlier releases, Slean seemed to be trying terribly hard to sound deep and wise; thankfully, that quality has softened somewhat over time. As a result, the music on her fifth CD The Baroness flows more effortlessly and beautifully than any of her previous works. The disc's first single Get Home ... |

Set Yourself On Fire»rank: 987par: Stars
Chroniques et points de vue:From :Sure they look pretty and sound pretty and all, but is this Montreal-based quartet ever going to amount to much, you know in the course of 'rock history'? Very likely, if their captivating third album, Set Yourself on Fire, is any indication. Vocalists Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell have never harmonized better together, and the whole keyboard-heavy band is at that delectable place where they transcend their influences. Great pop music is not about 'originality' (nor has it ever much been); it's a passionate marriage of idea and conviction. ... |

In Rainbows»rank: 92par: Radiohead
Chroniques et points de vue: :0n the deliriously satisfying ln Rainbows, Radiohead returns to a more straight-ahead (though subdued) rock sound. Much hubbub has been made about this record's innovative release. Radiohead allowed fans to pay what they wished to download fairly low-resolution tracks from the band's own website. Like so many innovations, it already seems funny both that it was such big news and that someone else of similar stature hadn't done it sooner. Some pundits were appalled that it took awhile to download the tracks if you tried to do it at the ... |
Filed under: Car Buying, Etc., Green
Diesel vehicles have nearly a 50-percent market share in Europe, thanks to tax incentives and diesel-friendly legislation across the EU. Diesels are so passé there that you can buy a BMW 730d and no one will think it odd that your luxury car burns oil. Pull up in a diesel 7-Series in America and people would leer at you like you've alighted from an amphibious vehicle reeking of saltwater and dead trout.
But now, thanks to the oft-reported combo of newly-raised CAFE standards, not-so-newly-raised gas prices, and the 50-state diesel engine, GM, Ford, and Chrysler are about to dip more than a hesitant toe into the diesel game. Chrysler offers a diesel in the Grand Cherokee, but soon all three automakers will offer diesels in their best-selling lineups of light trucks -- the Dodge Ram 1500 is expected to offer a 50-state diesel after 2009. Light trucks are being used to lead the charge since those buyers stand to gain the most with the least amount of (perceived) sacrifice.
Diesels currently have 3.2-percent of the American market. Some estimates put them at 15-percent by 2015. That's a huge leap, and diesel still has plenty of hurdles. Diesels will come with a cost premium over gasoline-engined cars. That should be easy enough to conquer -- incentives and some quick cost and longevity calculations should convince people of the benefit. The real hurdle is the nagging issue of perception. The plan will probably be to attack that with a price that makes the proposition unbeatable. Said Chrysler's director of environmental affairs, "If it's priced right, we can sell diesel here. Diesel can give you an immediate poke in fuel economy -- 20 to 40 percent. Not many technologies can deliver that today."
